Artisan Zone

New for 2017 we will be featuring an Artisan Zone at Earth Day Santa Cruz including a DIY Art Area led by Christopher Allen our featured Artist. Come learn how to upcycle materials into beautiful works of art that you can bring home and enjoy!

Christopher Allen came to Santa Cruz in 1996 to attend the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has worked as an educator for the last 15 years and as a recycled materials artist for the last three. Chris was first drawn to art by an insatiable desire to work with his hands and an abundance of available materials.

Chris has always loved the idea of re-purposing…taking everyday objects and using them in different, creative ways. He works with recycled bottles, salvaged plywood and barnwood, wire, scrap metal, spray paint and other found materials. He often uses the context of his found materials to create social and political commentary, and enjoys incorporating elements of pop-culture, literature, music and poetry. Chris likes to play with the juxtaposition between natural and human-made materials; between concrete and abstract representations of objects and ideas; and with the effects of light, shadow and texture.

Chris is always inspired by the world around him.
